Joan Jett review

August 30, 2010

What: Joan Jett
Where: PNE fair grounds
When: August 27th
Status: Full

Circumstances aside of a family loss, it was still a good show. The only major problem was that this was more suited for a club rather than an outdoor family fair. She did play a healthy 75 minutes and spanned her punk rock catalogue, however, only a few in the audience appreciated this and the others, just looked as though they were taking a rest for an hour due to greasy food overload.

The lighting was horrible as it made Joan look older and haggered than she really is. Whomever was hired to do the lighting must have been a high school kid working for $9/hour ‘cause you never saturate the stage with 80% red light without other neutral diffusing colors, especially if the show is being broadcasted as reds tend to bleed on screen.

It was understandable that 100% couldn’t be given the show, however, considering the 180 degree crowd mixture, it would be hard for me to keep momentum as well.

11: 02 am = After the PNE yesterday, I filled my bathtub with lemonade and bathed myself knee deep in lemonade.

4:30 pm = Off to the record store for an unplanned visit with the best friend. The best thing about best friends, they don’t ask questions when you’re in trouble, they’re just there for you when you need them and they want to make sure that you’re okay. No ice cream at McDonald's, however, had coconut yogurt instead.
8:30 pm = Vampire weekend sounds good…just saying.

10:45 pm = Sitting in my cupcake PJ's listening to the 22 records that I bought today. One of which is New Order, 2 New Orders actually.

August 26, 2010

11:04 pm = Buying your permission to do crazy things.

6:30 pm = Eating dinner in my Lady Gaga costume with my mom and dad. Mom is annoyed which was the planned, dad loves it and thinks it is funny. Just one more day to be Gaga please :)

8:29 am = Kissing you always brings out the truth which scares me. It's the fear that I look forward to every weekend.

8:27 am = My costume was so wide that I had to use the Handicap bathroom stall...not to mention walking sideways to get onto the floor. I mismeasured the door of GM Place, however, being Gaga for 2 days made me feel great.

What: Lady Gaga
When: August 23 & 24th
Where: GM Place (sorry not ready to call it Rogers Arena just yet)
Status: A lot of little monsters, the most beautiful audience ever.

I’ve seen Gaga enough times, over 4, to understand that she is just a character on stage in which little girls can look up to in spite of her constant need for profanity, questionable images and her effort to cheerlead her gay pride that would scare the red neck fathers of Abbotsford and Surrey.

You’re never too old to be reminded that it is okay to be who you are, a central theme of the show. Before I left the house, my mom said, “You’re so embarrassing to be around.” I will admit that my sense of fashion is over the top and my imagination makes people wonder if I am recreationally pill popping.

I almost wish my mom came to the show just so that I could prove that the only freak in the audience is her and that she doesn’t understand that we are all just people wanting to dress up and have some clean fun.
I’ve been awkward and weird most of my existence and it wasn’t until I was 17 that I really felt comfortable with my uniqueness and played it to my advantage. I grew up with Marilyn Manson whom made me feel that it was okay for me to be a freak. Regardless of how old you get, having that reassurance in which ever artist is the flavor of the week feels good.

I dressed in the full Gaga gear: Wig, hair bow, sunglasses, Klaus Nomi inspired dress and boots. I embraced my weirdness with my friend Russ. We were surrounded both nights by the best dressed audience whom wanted nothing more than to celebrate. Usually on GA floors there are a bunch of assholes, however, everyone loved each other and danced.

The performance, like her last two Queen E shows, were over the top pop spectacular and although there were a lot of distracting eye candy, this didn’t take away from the songs. There were cool remixes, mini intermission music and video, costumes and inspirational stage banter for the teenagers still discovering themselves. It was everything that I wanted from Gaga and more.

The show was two hours long and although my boots were killing my little feet, I was inspired by the emotion and the fun to carry on.

The set list missed a few memorable songs off “The Fame” and “The Fame Monster,” however, that is the downfall of having two solid albums where every song could be a single. 3 songs, new ones, were added to the set list. Although the new songs aren’t etched in my memory as of yet I know that these and other tracks next year will grow on me.

Her voice was awesome even though she was clearly singing on top of some backing tracks. She did stand out during “Speechless.”

Highlight of the evening was during “Paparazzi.” It was cheesy B-grade horror movie action that even my best friend Rob would appreciate.

The openers were “Semi Precious Weapons” and although the songs weren’t there, they were entertaining to watch. If they come back to Vancouver for a club show I would certainly check them out. Robin Black eat your heart out.

To answer my best friend’s question, I made it to the Monster Ball just fine not once but twice only to return to the reality that sucks where no one understands my colored hair and my desire to dress weird.

I bought some records from Neptoon:

The Jesus and Mary Chain - Psycho Candy
Madonna - Like A Prayer
Weird Al in 3-D
Prince Purple Rain
Aerosmith - Night In The Ruts
Platinum Blonde - Alien Shores
The Specials - Self Titled
Bryan Adams - Diana re-mix single
INXS - Suicide Blonde re-mix single
Queen - A Day at The Races
Queen - A Night at the Opera
The Cars - Self titled
Springsteen - Darkness on the Edge of town
Springsteen - The River

Spent under $40 which isn't as bad as last time.

August 25, 2010

Gareth and I went stateside shopping and here is what I grabbed, not as much as last time, however, still a lot none the less and cool at that.

Annie's organic bunny treats. I've seen these on commerical drive for $5 - $6 a box, however, at Target they were $1 each.

I went to a camping store to get some gear for my upcoming camping trip next long weekend and found some Freeze dried mint chocolate chip ice cream and dyhydrated veggies.

August 24, 2010

Some personal pics from Gaga last night. Arby from TWL and I. We went to yesterdays show and 'cause another certain TWL'fer my BFF didn't want to go to Gaga, Arby is going again with me.

August 23, 2010

What: Bryan Adams w/The Beach Boys
When: August 21, 2010
Where: Empire Field
Status: sold out happy Canadians
It’s the consistency in Bryan’s performance throughout the years which keeps me coming back show after show, a guaranteed money well spent and the Canadian pride surrounding it. Some of my friends have accused him of being too generic or “simple”, however, it’s the organic simple straight no bullshit rock which is what attracted me to Adams in the first place.

I was intentionally looking for something negative to write about, however, found nothing. The day was perfect, the set list was predictable and satisfying, the chemistry was right and the crowd minus the Beach Boy stupid fans, were great.
Speaking of which, it’s too bad the Beach Boys sucked some of the energy out of me with their 90 minute set that seemed to have gone on forever. Badly lip synched performance combined with the distraction of Mike Love and his need to wear a watch on each arm.

Thankfully Bryan picked up my spirits even though I was shaking the boredom of the Beach Boys off me during the first 3 songs.

Buble Review

August 23, 2010

What: Micheal Buble
Where: Rogers Area
When: Aug 20, 2010
Status: Sold out of soccer mom’s and the pussy faced husbands that were dragged there.

There are certain bands that make an imprint in the scrapbook of childhood memories and then there are those who were a huge part of it. When there’s a combination of both, regardless of how many times I have or haven’t seen an artist, there is an un-comparable, un-measureable sense of pride. This is how I felt last night.

I watched myself in the music and performance of Buble and there were times when I looked around said to myself, “how the fuck did you get all the way here, it was just like yesterday?” The surreal sentiment was shared and for the right reasons.

The show was mostly filled with stage banter, more so than other bands that I have seen. Unlike other bands, his stage banters were always addicting, amusing, humorous and dark. The dark side gave those in the audience the WTF? Look especially during the John Lennon shotgun imitation “I’m you’re number one fan.” Joking and banter aside, the songs were predictable, however, really well done. Not out of a greatest hits obligation but out of joy.

I wanted to share this moment with my best friend which is why I was reluctant and lazy to do the socializing thing and rather soak up every preshow moment. It wasn’t just watching another concert together, it was an invitation into part of my past musically. I haven’t been that inviting for a long time, therefore, it meant a lot. Skipping poor catered food was worth it if it meant a few extra moments to walk around the arena.

Buble’s vocals although they were strong in most parts, feel short in some areas unintentionally. The charisma certainly made up for that. He even dared for his own personal self indulgence, sang a few bars at the end, without a mike just to gauge the depth of the stadium.

Comedic and honest moment of the day was during his rendition of Billy Jean which made me laugh.

There was a moment during “Home” when those on the floor, mostly consisting of family and friends surrounded themselves in the lyrics as they shouted the chorus.
You may not get his music, however, just appreciate the idea in the commercial pop world that he beat the odds and made those here at home extremely proud. I had a tear in my eye after ‘cause holy fuck kid…did you make it big. Welcome home.

A bunch of random thoughts……

Is looking through an Ikea catalogue….the one thing that is assembled….on second thought the binding is coming underdone = must be Ikea quality.

New Kids on the Block are possibly touring with Back Street Boys.....Rob you in?

Gareth surprised me last night when we met for a few hours at the mall and bought me a Hello Kitty Journal with a lock on it since I was a bit unsettled over the invasion of my privacy and the need to have to burn my journals. It was the most respectful and thoughtful gift anyone has ever given me.

Is looking forward to hanging out with a bunch of people at the PNE on Saturday, new friends and old and especially looking forward to catching up with Jamie, different mosh pit than at Maiden.

Is watching Def Leppard's "Hello America" video and hopes that they're embarrassed by the video...I am just watching it. It's worse than Criss Angels attempt to be hair metal.
